It Starts In The Heart

Why did you do that? Why are you hurt? What have you done? How could you say that? - ever heard someone asking you these?
It starts with the heart. Every
word that we speak, every action that we do, and every choice that we make – it
comes out from the “abundance of the heart.” We do good and we do evil because it is what
the heart dictates us. It is by the condition of our heart that our words and actions
reflect. People see the way we are because it is what we showed them from the
depths of our heart.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that
which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth
forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Luke 6:45
The heart, when it is
uncontrolled, can bring destruction to our own selves. This is the reason God
warns us about our own hearts.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of
life. Proverbs 4:23
Yes, there are good things that
the heart can bring. It is good to feel happy, loved and cared about. It is
through our desires that we were able to reach our goals and dreams. However,
not everything the heart feels is inclined to the will of God.
For as he thinketh in
his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. Proverbs 23:7
There is called a foolish heart
and there is known as lust.
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were
thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was
darkened. Romans 1:21
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and
enticed. James 1:14
Not all of our longings are God’s
will, not all desires come from God and not all of our wishes are good. Many of
those who followed their hearts end up in misery – their lives were being
destroyed.
My heart is fixed, O
God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise. Psalms 57:7
Remember Samson – the strongest
man in the Bible. He killed the lion with his bare hands, carried the gate of
the city on top of the hills, and killed a thousand of men with the jawbone of
an ass. But he was defeated when he gave his heart to the woman Delilah, a
Philistine, whom his parents forbade him to marry. He disobeyed his parents and
God because of his own heart’s desire.
What to do then? We need to fix
our hearts.
